What is Forex anyway?

The foreign exchange market, also called the forex market, is where currencies are traded on an international scale. Investors make profits by taking advantage of differences in exchange rates. This means they buy a currency and then predict whether its value will rise or fall against other currencies. In April 2016, the average daily turnover in the forex market exceeded $5.1 trillion, making it the largest financial market in the world. The forex market is mainly focused on four cities: London, Tokyo, New York and Sydney. There is no physical forex exchange as we know it from the stock market; all trading takes place digitally. The forex market is open 24 hours a day, from Sunday night around 11 p.m. (when the Sydney exchange opens) to Friday night around 11 p.m. (when the New York exchange closes).
